On December 10, 2012, Jacqueline Mesa, Director of the Office of International Affairs of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, discussed regulatory reform in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis in a Washington Foreign Law Society event entitled “International Aspects of Derivatives Regulation Under Dodd-Frank.” The event – which drew a diverse group of attendees from the private and public sectors, academia, as well as representatives of foreign governments – provided an overview of international consensus in regulatory reform through the G-20 Leaders Commitment as well as the importance of international harmonization in rule-making. …

On November 13, the Washington Foreign Law Society honored Mexico at its annual reception in the State Department Diplomatic Reception Rooms. The event was co-sponsored with Harold Koh, the State Department’s Legal Adviser. Ambassador Arturo Sarukhan accepted the honors in a keynote address to the well over 350 people in attendance. …

On Tuesday, October 2, 2012 the Washington Foreign Law Society and GWU Law School hosted a post re-argument discussion with counsel in Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum and others who have been closely following the case. The discussion addressed the October 1 Supreme Court oral arguments over whether U.S. courts have jurisdiction under the Alien Tort Statute over aliens’ claims of human rights abuses against foreign corporations.…
