Save the Date – 2018 WFLS Gala

Honoring

Benjamin Ferencz
Former Chief Prosecutor of the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Thursday, September 13, 2018
Washington, D.C.

The Washington Foreign Law Society is pleased to announce that Mr. Ferencz will receive the Society’s Harry LeRoy Jones Award at the Society’s upcoming Dinner Gala for his contributions to the development of international law. The WFLS bestows the Harry LeRoy Jones Award annually upon an honoree who promotes the rule of law—and international law in particular—and has a profound and lasting impact on institutions dedicated to justice, international law, or scholarship.

Ferencz graduated from Harvard Law School in 1943, before joining the Army and fighting in every campaign in Europe under General Patton.  After the end of the war, Ferencz was asked to join the U.S. effort in prosecuting Nazi criminals, which included gathering evidence of Nazi brutality.  He served as Chief Prosecutor for the United States in the Einsatzgruppen trial – “the biggest murder trial in history” – in which twenty-two defendants were charged with murdering over a million people. All of the defendants were convicted.

Of his experience with the concentration camps, Ferencz has said: “It was as if I had peered into hell. That’s why I’m still fighting, to prevent that from happening again.”

Ferencz built on his experience to advocate against the use of armed force for political goals and for the creation of an international criminal court as “the missing link in the world legal order,” contributing to the establishment of the ICC in 2002. Ferencz continues to write and speak across the world for global peace and the rule of law.
